Base put in C23r.6 at ca. 52 Ma following Wang et al. (2019) -- as recommended by J.Hooker, 30Sept’19.  Previously, was 75% up in the C24r subchron following R. Speijer’s 23Sept’19 advice that "Wang et al. (2010) placed this Top Bumbanian level in the upper part of C24r.".  Named after the Arshanto Fm (Erlian Basin, China).  BUT, base is debated - 30Sept’19 emails: J.Hooker:  Wang et al (2019) estimate base Arshantan to be in C23r at c.52Ma. followed by R. Speijer: "I used the only properly published paleomag data (top C24r) in Wang et al. 2010. Apparently, this turned out not compatible with the observation of a presumably older fauna in C24n, so C24r was changed to C23r.  I don?t quite agree with this procedure, but for me a higher placement is fine.  It?s time that this group publishes a full synthesis of all paleomag data relative to the ALMAs. "  J. Hooker adds: " I don?t mind which level is used"   "Both the Mixodontia and Arctostylopida disappeared, whereas the large archaic ungulates, such as Coryphodontidae and Dinocerata, still persisted. Among the extant mammalian groups, the Perissodactyla significantly diversed and are dominant in the fauna. Most newly appeared families are of Perissodactyla. The perissodactyl families, Lophialetidae and Deperetellidae greatly flourished. Mammalian taxa, common and limited in the Arshantan, include Mesonyx, Mongolonyx, Gobiatherium, Schlosseria, Pappaceras, Litolophus, Erlianomys, Advenimus ulungurensis, Dawsonolagus." (Wang et al., 2019).
